Lavabo

Q: With social distancing, how do you envision the lavabo at the preparation of the gifts? We are thinking an altar server brings up and leaves the water pitcher, wash bowl and towel on altar for priest to wash his own hands so that a server doesn’t need to break social distancing to assist. Afterwards, the server would retrieve pitcher, bowl and towel. Do you see another or better possibility?

A: That’s what I do. A server sets the altar and steps away. I step up, and after bowing and praying “With humble spirit”, I step away. The server sets the bowl and towel on the altar and picks up the wine cruet, then steps aside. I step up, wash my hands by myself at the side of the altar, then move away, and the server comes back to pick up the vessels.
