Leading a vigil prayer service

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q:  I’ve been looking into the rubrics, canon law and any instructions about how deacons should dress to lead a vigil prayer service for the deceased at a church or funeral home, but no luck.  Please let me know how we as Deacons should dress appropriately for these occasions?

A:  You’re right. There is no clear direction. The custom is for Catholic clergy to wear a suit when presiding in funeral homes. However, I think it would be acceptable to wear alb and stole if that seemed more fitting for the occasion.

If the vigil is at church, then vest as usual – alb and stole or cassock, surplice and stole.
