Marriage on Sunday

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: My daughter will be married in October 2019 at a Nuptial Mass on a Sunday afternoon.  The Mass is not a regularly scheduled Sunday parish Mass. Are we required to use the readings of the day or may we use Marriage readings? If we are able to use the Marriage readings does the Mass satisfy the Sunday Obligation?  Thank you.

A: Congratulations to your daughter. I’ve covered this question extensively in my books One Love and Inseparable Love. The rules for Sunday afternoon are the same for Saturday night. A wedding that takes place on a Sunday in Ordinary Time apart from a parish mass uses the readings and presidential prayers of the ritual mass for marriage. Any mass celebrated from late Saturday through Sunday night satisfies the Sunday obligation. The time of the mass satisfies the obligation, not the readings.
