Masses for the dead

Q: My understanding is that a funeral Mass is not allowed on a solemnity such as the Assumption, correct? What about a memorial Mass? There has not been a funeral Mass yet for this person so I am not sure why they are calling it a Memorial Mass. But regardless, I guess the question is, can any Mass other than the Assumption be celebrated on August 15?

A: I’ve got a helpful chart at the end of my book Sacred Times that answers questions like this at a glance. Masses for the dead are not permitted on solemnities of precept.

So, no, a Memorial Mass may not be celebrated on August 15. However, a priest may celebrate the Mass of the Assumption on that day while speaking about the deceased in the context of the readings assigned for the Assumption.
