Non-porous linen for use in Dedication of a new Altar

Q: I am currently considering purchasing a custom-made impermeable altar cloth (novino brand) from a Catholic supply store to use to be the first covering of the mensa at the end of the rite of dedication of our new altar. Is there be a type of fabric that I could purchase at a regular fabric store that would serve the same purpose of protecting our “real” altar cloth from absorbing any extra chrism remaining on the marble altar top?

Thank you for your help.

A: I describe the anointing and wiping of the altar in my book New Church, New Altar. The order of dedication doesn’t say much about that cloth—just that it be nonporous. Someone at a fabric store may give good advice. The cloth need not be custom made for this purpose.
