Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day

Q: Since Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day falls in a Sunday of Advent, is it or can it be transferred to another day?If so, what day? Questions have come up.

A: The feast cannot be transferred, but that pertains to the readings and prayers and vestments of the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours.

On December 12, at the Advent Sunday Mass, people can still sing hymns to Guadalupe, the homily can speak about her, people may perform a traditional obra, welcome the matachines, and sing the serenata if they wish. All those devotional elements could be part of the Third Sunday of Advent.

However, GIRM 376 allows the priest to celebrate a Votive Mass on an Advent weekday or on an obligatory memorial for some real necessity or pastoral advantage. Such a Mass would not include the Gloria, but the readings and prayers of any Mass in #10 of the Votive Masses or of the Advent Mass in the Commons of the Blessed Virgin Mary (II) could be applied.

So, to be precise, the feast cannot be transferred, but a Votive Mass in honor of Our Lady could be celebrated on a weekday.

Or people can have lots of celebration for Our Lady on December 12 while using the readings and prayers of the Third Sunday of Advent.
