Paschal candle

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: Good afternoon! I had a question/favor to ask. I was wondering if you could offer a suggestion or solution that I could share with other Liturgists in regards to paschal candle? Many of us are omitting the Easter Vigil and will just be celebrating Easter Sunday morning. How can we incorporate blessing and lighting the paschal candle on Sunday morning?

Any guidance you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A: In this unusual year, prepare the candle in the sacristy without ceremony, put it in the stand, and  light it before mass begins on Sunday.

This will sound snarkier than it is, but here goes: Even in a normal Vigil, the candle is never blessed. The fire is blessed.

It’s OK to light the candle with any flame as we do on each of the other 50 days.
