Perpetual profession

Q: I have another question, which is not really liturgical, but liturgically related because it is always happening during the liturgical celebrations. Myself I am a religious priest. But I am always perplexed whenever I say mass for other religious, mostly sisters. At the occasion of silver of golden jubilees of some of them, or at the occasion of the patronal feasts, they are asked to renew the vows, even if they have already perpetually professed. What is then the meaning of perpetual profession if they can still renew these vows they have perpetually professed. It is confusing the meaning of perpetual profession. Can they renew something that was perpetually or definitely professed.

A: The USCCB has just published its study edition of The Order of Religious Profession, which exists as a model from which religious orders may base their various celebrations of profession. Based on the Vatican’s Latin typical edition, it includes celebrations such as initiation into religious life, temporary profession, perpetual profession, and renewal of vows.

Now, perhaps some religious orders never renew vows for the reasons you adduce. However, profession is a sacramental, not a sacrament, and hence it has no sacramental formula. In theory, a profession can be renewed. We renew baptism promises a lot, but we never repeat the sacramental formula of baptism.
