Sign of the Cross at the Gospel

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: Good morning, and thank you for all you do to make our Liturgies more prayerful and understandable to the Assembly.

I have been asked by members of RCIA and teachers in our Catholic schools what is the name of three signings of the cross by the Assembly prior to the Gospel.  I have read what I can – but cannot find a name for this action.

A: Thanks for your comments on my blog.

GIRM 134 and Order of Mass 15 simply call it the Sign of the Cross, which is a title we associate with a slightly different action at the beginning of Mass.

I think it would be appropriate then to call it the Sign of the Cross at the Gospel, in order to make the distinction.
