“Take this all of you and eat it”

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: While attending Mass out of state recently, I saw that the priest would speak directly and in a loud enough voice to be picked up by their microphone the phase “…take this all of you and eat it…” into both vessels at consecrations. Minor as it was it was still interesting to witness.

A: This used to be a custom, but there is no such rubric in the Order of Mass. All it says is for the priest to pronounce the words “clearly and distinctly.” He “bows slightly” at the words of consecration. This could bring his mouth closer to the vessels, but there is no longer any instruction about speaking into them.
