Votive Mass

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: Our diocesan Fatima apostolate usually celebrates an Our Lady of Mount Carmel vigil and Mass.

Since July 16th falls on a Sunday this year, they want to know what restrictions are in force for this celebration?

A: Usually, you celebrate the Mass in Ordinary Time, though hymns, decorations and the homily could be devoted to our Lady of Mount Carmel.

However, according to GIRM 374, a bishop may give permission for a Votive Mass to replace a Sunday Mass in Ordinary Time. So the group could appeal to their bishop for such a concession at a particular Mass.
