Wedding on All Souls Day

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: I have been asked to officiate at a wedding at St. Francis Xavier on Saturday, 2 November 2024, which is All Souls Day.  Are weddings permitted on All Souls Day?  Are they permitted on All Saints Day?  I checked the ordo and cannot make sense of what it says, or does not say.  I was looking for the “V” symbol but it is not given.  Under All Souls it just says “FMO” (funeral Mass only as I understand it).  The bride and groom are eagerly awaiting an answer for planning purposes, so I hope  you can answer me soon.

A wedding may take place on either day, but not with the Ritual Mass for the Celebration of Marriage. The readings, presidential prayers and preface come from All Saints or All Souls. The couple exchanges their consent after the homily, and the priest imparts the nuptial blessing.

If it’s a wedding without Mass, then they may use the usual wedding readings.

See GIRM 372 and the intro to Ritual Masses section V in the missal.
